The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals[]

MacNamara first appears following the death of Bill where he manages to drive off the infected Alice, Deb and Hatchetfield Bee, saving Paul's life—however, he knocks Paul out as a precautionary measure at the end of the scene. When Paul later comes to, MacNamara apologies for knocking him out and offers him a way off the island, via helicopter, citing that he is willing to break rules and not follow orders in order to follow his own personal, higher law, of the "love and strength of the human heart." He orders Paul to synchronize his time piece with his watch, but upon discovering Paul uses his phone to tell time, proceeds to smash it, giving Paul his own watch instead. Paul then tells him that he can't leave the island without Emma, so, in response, MacNamara authorizes him to use his firearm and sends him to go find Emma.

When Ted abandons Paul and Emma to secure his own safety and reach Oakley Park, he finds MacNamara's unit and calls out to them, is promptly shot by an infected MacNamara. He and his soldiers then all sing America is Great Again, and nearly kill Paul but Emma shoots MacNamara, allowing them to escape.

Black Friday[]

MacNamara first appears when the President and his cabinet are fighting over the Wiggly doll. He saves them by shooting the doll. He introduces himself and reveals to the politicians that there are eldritch forces at work and tells them that if humanity is going to have any chance of survival, Howard is going to have to come with him.

MacNamara takes Howard to P.E.I.P headquarters where he introduces him to Xander Lee. MacNamara and Xander explain that 13 years ago, P.E.I.P constructed a portal to the Black and White, and that MacNamara's mentor, Wilbur Cross, stepped through the portal, and came out a raving lunatic. He pledged his loyalty to the forces within and then disappeared. MacNamara then reveals his plan to send Howard into the portal to attempt to reason with Wiggly. Upon learning this plan, Howard attempts to flee, but is calmed by Lee and MacNamara, who convince him to follow through with the plan.

MacNamara then appears before Howard steps through the portal, assuring him that a nuke is ready to deploy in case things go south. When the connection to Howard within the portal weakens and MacNamara realizes that Howard is in danger, MacNamara (against Lee's wishes), runs into the portal without a suit and manages to save the President from the Sniggles as he cuts through them with the "Blade of Truth". MacNamara manages to save Howard, but because he went into the portal without a suit, his body is fated to dematerialize into the Black and White and his soul to be absorbed.

When Lex Foster is about to be choked to death by Sherman Young, MacNamara appears to her and offers her his gun to fight off her killer. He explains to Lex that she has powers and is able to reach into the Black and White. After Lex uses his firearm to shoot Sherman, MacNamara orders her to find a warrior of light who is trapped in a deep sleep and to kill Wiggly's prophet in order to save the world. He then disappears.

Yellow Jacket[]

MacNamara appears in the opening to the story. In response to Matt Dahan asking "where'd he go" he responds "I never left".

Personality and Traits[]

MacNamara is kind hearted and noble man. He has an outwardly traditional military persona with a deep love for his country. However, this love for his country is outweighed by his belief in the universal truth of love and the human heart. He has the ability to be stern and almost scary but ultimately does care for people when they are truly good. As well as this, MacNamara can appear very mysterious due to his advanced knowledge. MacNamara is a very brave and respectful man who generally appears to want to do the right thing.

Trivia[]

  • In The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals credits MacNamara's surname is spelt McNamara; however, this was changed, as Nick Lang said he prefers the other spelling.
  • MacNamara's name is not based off anyone or anything, it just "sounded right."[1]
  • MacNamara is not a fan of any type of digital watch.[2]
  • Although the dialogue for both shows was written at the same time, McNamara is a noticeably more heroic figure in Black Friday than TGWDLM.[3]
  • In a monologue cut from Black Friday, MacNamara mentions having a husband. According to Nick Lang, this was cut due to time restrictions.[4]
  • Assuming that P.E.I.P. follows the same rules as the rest of the US army, due to the time it takes to obtain the rank of General, MacNamara would be 42 or older.
  • MacNamara is Jeff Blim's favorite role of all of the characters he played in TGWDLM.
  • On a scale of being a badass from one to ten, with one being 'not at all' to ten being 'basically a superhero', Nick Lang rates MacNamara as an eleven.[5]
  • In some performances of Black Friday (most notably, the second digital ticket of the show), one can hear MacNamara say "stay with me" to Lex before the Monsters and Men reprise starts.
  • In the YouTube video of Black Friday MacNamara's appearances are frequently accompanied by a instrumental version of "America Is Great Again" from TGWDLM as background.
  • MacNamara was implied to appear in a potential future Nightmare Time episode named Orbweaver.
