Nightmare Time is the first season in Nightmare Time: a series of livestreamed readings set within the Hatchetfield Universe written by Nick and Matt Lang with music and lyrics by Jeff Blim.[1] The season was the third installment in the Hatchetfield Series and was read live by the combined casts of the previous installments: The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and Black Friday. The season consisted of three episodes, each containing two separate stories, and premiered weekly over three weeks from October 10, 2020 to October 24, 2020. The first episode was streamed directly to YouTube on October 10, 2020 and the final two episodes were uploaded to YouTube on February 14, 2021.
A second season known as Nightmare Time 2 was announced on October 8, 2021.[2]

Development[]
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick Lang chose to remain in Wichita, Kansas with his brother Matt Lang and his girlfriend Rusty where he has previously been visiting.[3] While attempting to work and write on other projects the brothers found themselves returning to the characters of Hatchetfield and conceptualised several stories featuring them. With the ongoing pandemic forcing the closure of theatres and the subsequent postponement of the intended third Hatchetfield musical Nerdy Prudes Must Die, the live readings were created in the hopes of providing content to fans while theatres were closed. Initially each episode of the season was intended to contain three stories with the first episode featuring the stories Ethan Doesn't Die, Watcher World and Jane's A Car. However, due to the extended length of the episodes when combined with reading stage directions certain stories were cut from the episodes and the pairing of stories changed. Ultimately the stories Ethan Doesn't Die, In Memoriam and Bottle Imps were cut from the season.[4] The season was named after a common musical motif within the Hatchetfield season stemming from the 'The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals' song Not Your Seed.

The season was announced via a YouTube trailer on October 1, 2020.[5] Prior to an episode's release a synopsis was released on Team StarKid's Instagram with the synopsis for the first story of the episode being released on a Wednesday and the synopsis of the second being released on the Friday prior to the episode's Saturday release.
