The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals[]

Pete is first seen at Beanie's where he become increasingly annoyed as the barista, Emma Perkins, is too busy talking to Paul Matthews to give him the hot chocolate he ordered. He is offered a voucher by Nora due to Emma's slow service.

Later, Pete is one of the first people to be infected by the Hive. He is seen performing in the song La Dee Dah Dah Day.

Black Friday[]

Pete appears in What If Tomorrow Comes as one of the 'ghosts of Hatchetfield' in Black Friday. When the countdown begins, he is stood with his brother Ted Spankoffski, holding hands with him. He remains this way until a loud whooshing sound is heard overhead and the stage fades to black.

Abstinence Camp[]

Pete first appears in the car with his brother Ted as he drives him to camp. Ted reflects on his own days at the camp, but as he reflects Ted remembers the legend of Lumber Axe, the mad woodsman, and kicks his brother from the car, refusing to go any closer, and Pete is forced to walk the rest of the way. Later at a check-in desk, Pete has a zip-lock bag of chocolate bars confiscated despite his protests of low blood sugar.

The next day, while hiking, Pete struggles to keep up with the rest of the group due to his low blood sugar. After Pete falls to his knees unable to continue, Steph stops next to him and offers him a chocolate bar. The two talk and joke for a while before bringing up the various rumours about them: Steph's pregnancy and how Pete whacked off during the M.E.A.P. test. They both agree that whatever happened or didn't happen in the bathroom should stay in the bathroom. Steph then leaves to go catch up with the rest of the group. That night, the campers gather around the campfire as Gabe, another camper, tells the story of Lumber Axe the Mad Woodsman (much to the skepticism of Pete and Steph).

The next day, Steph is irritated by Grace Chasity, and decides to escape her by entering the boy's washroom. In the washroom Pete is getting ready to shower, Steph is surprised by how jacked and kind of cute Pete is. The boy offers to leave her to shower in peace but she refuses and the two begin showering in separate stalls. Steph and Pete joke about the axe-man and decide to test the theory by showering together. Before Pete can enter Steph's stall though they're interrupted and confronted by Grace and the Jerry's. This interruption stops Lumber Axe who was hiding on the other side of the wall, ready to kill them both the second Pete entered the stall.

Pete and Steph are taken to the camp directors office, where Boy Jerry and Girl Jeri lecture them on their actions. Pete and Steph are put in solitary confinement for the rest of the summer.

In solitary confinement, Pete discovers an old pornographic magazine that belonged to his brother. He is about to get off to it when Steph breaks down the door and tells him that they're leaving. The two wander through the woods trying to find their way out when they stumble across Boy Jerry, burying Mary and Noah. Boy Jerry turns on them, trying to hit them with his shovel, but is stopped by Pete who snatches it from his hands and smacks him over the head with it. Pete then tries to break the shovel over his leg but fails, breaking his leg instead. Steph jokes to him about how she's not into jocks and kisses him. As they part however they find Lumber Axe looming over them. Pete and Steph attempt to run away from the axe-man, but Pete's broken leg slows them down. Lumber Axe throws Jerry's shovel at them but misses, allowing Steph to grab it and jam it into his chest. Lumber Axe smacks Steph, sending her tumbling to the ground, before advancing on her. Pete tries to save Steph by throwing everything he has at Lumber Axe, but nothing works until he throws the porn magazine. Lumber Axe is unable to look at it and is backed by Steph into a tree. It seems like the teens have won until Lumber Axe rips the tree from the ground and hurls it at Steph, pinning her to the ground and shredding the magazine.

Lumber Axe is about to hit Steph and Pete with his axe but he's interrupted by Grace putting herself between them. She tells Lumber Axe about how she's the biggest prude he'd ever meet before pointing out that his parents, Jerry and Jeri, had sex outside of marriage. Lumber Axe (Little Jerry) becomes enraged and kills both his parents before handing Grace the axe and leaving. Pete and Steph attempt to continue leaving the camp but Grace refuses to let them leave. Days later, Grace stands in the arts and crafts tent instructing the campers on how to weave a basket. She oversees the camp keeping everyone in line via the threat of her axe. Meanwhile, at the edge of the woods, Lumber Axe watches as his woods are finally clean.

Nerdy Prudes Must Die[]

Pete first appears in class at Hatchetfield High. He's completing a test when he's approached by Steph Lauter who asks him to help her cheat. Pete reluctantly agrees and hands his paper over to Steph but is caught by Grace Chasity who reports them to Miss Mulberry. Pete and Steph are sent to the principal's office. As they go, Steph and Pete talk and Steph ends up telling Pete he's funny. The bell then rings and Pete panics and runs away from Steph in fear of Max Jägerman. Pete and the other nerds all actively hide from Max in order to avoid being bullied.

Later in the library, Pete meets with his friends, Ruth and Richie, debuting his new look of a sweater. They begin working on a group project, talking about what happened earlier with Steph and calling it a "fantasy". This conversation is interrupted by Steph calling Pete from a payphone. She invites Pete to meet her at Pasqualli's to study, which Pete eagerly accepts. He immediately heads towards the restaurant whilst singing about his self-esteem.

When Pete makes it to Pasqualli's, Max sees him in the parking lot and harasses him. Pete calls him out on his behavior, saying he refuses to grovel and that he doesn't find Max scary, that he's just a bully. Max retorts by punching him in the stomach, clarifying that he decides who can hang out with whom, who is a nerd, and that he's a god. He tells Peter to "say his prayers".

The next day, Steph finds Pete in the boys bathroom and is horrified to find he has a black eye. She decides that Max needs to pay for what he's done and the group (Steph, Pete, Ruth, Richie, and Grace) decide to prank Max by scaring him. That night, the nerds lure Max to Waylon Hall. Pete poses as a ghost and pretends to haunt Max. While Max is initially scared, he eventually tries to fight the ghost, making Pete run away. When Max is about to beat up the disguised Ruth (who he believes is a real skeleton), Steph reveals to him that it's all a trick. Max is actually touched by their actions, calling the prank the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him. Max's feelings change however when the old house's floor gives in and he falls three stories down, landing on a sharp piece of wood. In his final moments before death, Max swears revenge on the group and nerdy prudes everywhere. The panicked group, at Grace's suggestion, decides to hide the body beneath the house. They chop Max up and bleach the house to get rid of any evidence. They also decide to not tell anyone about what happened.

Two weeks later, Steph approaches Pete and excitedly informs him that she got an C+ on her test thanks to his tutoring. He congratulates her and Steph then invites Pete to join her at the big game against Clivesdale.

The next day, Pete, Steph, Grace and Ruth are called into the principal's office to be questioned by police about a student's death. They are tight lipped when they think the investigation is about Max, but when it's revealed she's there about Richie, they are shocked and horrified. Shapiro tells them of the bloody "Nerdy prudes must die" message left at Richie's murder scene and the four deny any connection to it. Following Shapiro's exit the group talks with each other about the situation and their fears of getting caught.

Later, Pete interrupts Paul Matthews attempting to flirt with Emma Perkins at the Beanie's counter and loudly asks for the hot chocolate he ordered. Emma makes it for him and then he goes to sit with Steph. The two begin to argue, blaming each other for what had happened. This culminates in Steph telling Pete that she knows he can't ignore her because he's crazy about her. Pete denies this. The couple is interrupted by a frantic Grace who informs them Ruth has also died and that the police know they're involved in Max's death. As Grace is telling them her plans to escape the country, Officer Bailey enters the coffee shop and the group runs away. Outside the coffee shop, the teens are approached by Solomon Lauter, the mayor and also Steph's father, who tells them to get in his car.

While driving, Solomon tells the trio about how the Waylons were part of a cult and had extreme powers. He informs them of how a spell was cast on Waylon Hall that prevents anyone from dying there, a spell that has caused Max to come back as a ghost. They arrive in the woods and Solomon has them dig for the Black Book. He then explains how the only way to stop Max is to use the Black Book in a ritual to meet with the Lords in Black and make a deal with them. It is at this moment that the group is approached by the muderous, undead Max who has killed Miss Tessburger, Solomon's driver. The teens run away and Max murders Solomon.

Steph, Pete, and Grace discover that to perform the ritual, they must be at an altar, a location that the Waylons built. One of these locations is Hatchetfield High, so they decide to head there. Before they can leave, Detective Shapiro finds them, putting them into her squad car. The teens beg to be let out, explaining that Max has returned. Before Shapiro can shut them down, she sees Max. Shapiro tries to drive away, but Max appears in the car and smashes her head into the windshield, causing the car to crash.

When everyone regains consciousness, they struggle to make their way out of the car as Shapiro lies motionless. When they arrive at Hatchetfield High, they begin the ritual. Upon the arrival of the Lords in Black, Pete is taunted by Tinky who wants to collect him in his "toy box" like he collected Pete's brother. The trio offers to make a deal with the Lords where they'll give them anything they want in exchange for the Lords stopping Max. The Lords tell the group that they want the thing they cherish most. For Steph this is Pete. They tell Steph they'll stop Max once Steph kills Pete.

Heartbroken, Steph and Pete head outside. Pete confesses he knows what the Lords want Steph to do. Steph refuses to kill him, saying that, instead, he should give up whatever he cherishes most. Pete tells her that what he cherishes most is Steph, and that either way, one of them would have to die. Steph is reluctant, but Pete convinces her to shoot him. Before she does so, Pete asks if everything were different, if she would go to Homecoming with him. Steph tearfully says yes before shooting Pete.

Before the bullet can hit Pete, Max barges in, catching it and throwing both Steph and Pete to the floor, swearing he'll kill them. He begins charging towards Steph, but Grace enters, telling Max that she wants to sleep with him. Max, still into Grace, agrees to make love to her at the fifty-yard line, saying he'll kill Steph and Pete later. Grace and Max have sex, while Steph and Pete watch in bewildered confusion. Grace then reveals to the two that she gave up the thing she cherishes most: her virginity. The three watch as Max's soul is taken by the Lords in Black.

Weeks later, Steph and Pete attend the homecoming together and dance happily together.

Personality and Traits[]

On the surface, Pete Spankoffski appears like a stereotypical nerd, he has an affinity for chemistry and math and he suffers from low blood sugar which can make it hard for him to participate in sporting activities. As a result of his nerdiness, Pete has often been bullied at school and as a result of this he has actively crafted a persona and look for himself in order to be bullied as little as possible. Despite this, Pete is quite proud of his nerdiness. Alongside this, he is often prone to anxiety and outbursts in stressful situations. However, underneath Pete is a caring young man willing to take risks and stand up for those he cares about. He can be somewhat clumsy and so his attempts to be a hero can sometimes make situations worse. Much like his brother, Pete can be flirty and overtly sexual, though not as much as Ted.

  • Strength- Despite his seemingly nerdy outward appearance, Pete is surprisingly strong due to his use of a shake weight.
  • Intelligence- Pete is very intelligent being very skilled in school and having a good GPA.
  • Tap Dancing- Pete took four years of tap classes and so is somewhat skilled at tap dancing.

Steph Lauter[]

Steph Lauter is Pete's main love interest. Despite their vastly different standings in the social hierarchy, Steph and Pete genuinely care for each other and are willing to put themselves in harms way to protect the other. They each have a deep understanding of the other seeing beyond the general exterior that each puts out to the world. While many people actively perceive Steph as a typical popular girl and dismiss her intelligence and often actively patronize her, Pete genuinely views Steph as intelligent and is proud of the work and effort she puts into improving. Meanwhile, Steph actively sees beyond the exterior of nerdiness that Pete is often perceived as having and views him as funny, kind and brave. Steph and Pete's relationship is one genuinely based on trust. They are honest with each other and trust each other to keep the others secrets.

In Abstinence Camp, Steph and Pete's relationship evolves as one of necessity and they find the other as the only reasonable person at Camp Idontwannabang. However, ultimately their relationship becomes one of trust with the phrase "whatever happens in the bathroom, stays in the bathroom" becoming the philosophy for their relationship. Ultimately their relationship evolves into something romantic with each actively attempting to protect the other from Lumber Axe.

In Nerdy Prudes Must Die, Steph and Pete's relationship originates as one of circumstance with Pete being implicated in Steph's plan to cheat on a test. However despite this, Steph comes to actively care for Pete and is horrified by the bullying he experiences at Hatchetfield High. Steph then becomes highly protective of Pete and aims to help him in any way she can. Following the death of Max, their relationship becomes one based on trust and they become very close friends. The two do eventually develop romantic feelings for the other which they initially deny but ultimately the other becomes the thing the other values most. The two do then develop a romantic relationship and go to homecoming together.

Trivia[]

  • Although Pete can be seen in What If Tomorrow Comes, he was originally going to have a larger role in Black Friday. The original script featured him as an employee at the Cineplex, where he would be accosted by Ethan Green over the cost of cinema tickets. However, as Robert Manion was later cast as Ethan, he could not play both characters at once and so Pete's role was filled by Joey Richter's Cineplex Teen.
  • In the original script for TGWDLM, Pete was instead referred to as Obnoxious Teen.[1]
  • Pete did eventually get his hot chocolate, but he waited a long time and was infected before he got to drink it.[2]
  • His real name was leaked accidentally by Matt Lang before Abstinence Camp where his name was officially revealed. However the spread of the name was quickly stopped. [3]
  • According to him the name "Spankoffski" is Polish.
