Nerdy Prudes Must Die[]
Ruth first appears alongside her classmates in class at Hatchetfield High. At the end of the period Ruth and the other nerds are forced to run through the hallways in the hopes of actively avoiding being bullied by Max Jägerman.
Later, Ruth joins her friends Richie and Pete to work on their thermodynamics project. Ruth and Richie then inquire about Pete's interaction with Steph Lauter and remind Pete that he's not cool and that he has no chance with Steph. However, their conversation is interrupted by Pete's phone going off. As Pete speaks on the phone, Richie and Ruth attempt to listen in and are shocked yet excited to find that Steph has invited Pete to Pasqualli's. While Pete is reluctant to go, Richie and Ruth remind him that this is a rare occurrence and encourage him to go.
The next day, Ruth and Richie are approached by Steph who asks why Pete stood her up the night before. Richie accuses Steph of luring Pete to Pasquale's so he'd get beaten up, but Steph ignores the allegation and asks where Pete is. Looking for Pete, the three barge into the boys' bathroom, finding Pete with a black eye. When Steph wants to report Max to the principal, Richie and Ruth remind her that Max has privilege as the star football player of Hatchetfield Nighthawks. Instead the group, after being joined by Grace Chasity, decide to prank Max and embarrass him online.
The group decide to lure Max to Waylon Hall under the guise of a party and then scaring him, using Pete as a ghost and Ruth as a skeleton, while Richie films everything to label him as a "potty-pants". Max arrives at the house and the five hide, playing creepy music. The plan initially works while Richie films it but they stop when Max almost beats up Ruth. Upon discovering the prank, Max is overjoyed, saying this is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him, that he might've misjudged the five of them.
Before Max can continue raving about their successful "surprise," the floor beneath him breaks and he plummets three floors. Grace, Richie, Steph, and Pete run to find him, but when they do, Max has a wooden plank protruding from his chest, seconds away from death. With his last breath, Max proclaims that "Nerdy prudes must die." In panicked shock, at Grace's suggestion, the remaining five decide to hide the body beneath the house, chopping Max up and bleaching the house to get rid of any evidence. They also decide not tell anyone about what happened.
A few weeks later, Hatchetfield High is a much better place with nerds such as Ruth no longer being bullied. That weekend Ruth and the rest of the school attend the big game.
A few days later, Ruth, Pete, Grace and Steph are called into the Principals office to be questioned by Detective Shapiro. They are tight lipped when they think the investigation is about Max, but when it's revealed she's there about Richie, they are horrified. Shapiro tells them of the bloody "Nerdy prudes must die" message and the four deny any connection to it. The police are called away after Max's body is found.
Later, Ruth makes her way to the Hatchetfield High auditorium, where she is working in the sound booth on light direction for the play "The Barbecue Monologues." Following a run through, Miss Mulberry asks Ruth to fix a light while everyone else heads on break. Ruth ends up center stage, taking it in, saying she could perform if it weren't for her anxiety. She begins to perform a scene from the Barbecue Monologues and sings of how she yearns to be the center of attention just once. This scene shows how she really feels on the inside and how she just wants to be loved and brings the audience to more of an understanding and appreciation to Ruth.
As soon as the song ends, Ruth hears Max's voice booing her. Max's ghost taunts Ruth before sneaking up behind her and killing her by splitting her in two with a wedgie. He pulls her underwear over her head and leaves.
Workin' Boys[]
Ruth features in Workin' Boys as one of the cast members of Workin' Girls. Ruth is desperate to do a good job in the role of Secretary #4 and so asks Hidgens a number of questions about the role. This annoys Hidgens greatly and he seemingly talks down to her about her questions and implies her role is worthless. Hidgens tells Ruth he doesn't care how Ruth says her line as long as she sticks to the script and gets her to repeat it until he's happy with it. He then warns Ruth that if she tries to adlib he'll kill her. Rehearsals for Workin' Girls then commence with Ruth repeatedly saying her single line. At one point she then attempts to change the line and is yelled at by Hidgens.
On opening night of the play, Ruth is very nervous and spends her time backstage practicing her line. However, once she runs on stage for her scene she completely forgets her line and misunderstands Zoey's attempts to help her. Zoey then continues with the scene and Ruth walks away sadly. Following the end of Act 1, Ruth approaches Hidgens and apologizes to him for messing up her line, promising that she'll get it next time. Hidgens tells her that there will not be a next time and Ruth and the rest of the cast are then murdered by Professor Hidgens.
Personality and Traits[]
Ruth is an extremely nerdy yet sexual character. Much like her friend Richie, Ruth often struggles with social cues and has a tendency to make others uncomfortable with her sexual nature. Ruth’s sexual neediness is unavoidable, but is largely due to her desire for social interaction and romantic relationships. Due to being bullied at school, Ruth can often be scared of others and feel a lack of confidence in her own abilities. While she dislikes the social order within Hatchetfield High, Ruth feels unable to change her status within it due to traits such as her anxiety, something that is actively reflected in her involvement in the Drama Department. While Ruth actively wants to perform onstage, it is her anxiety that stops her from doing so.
